The Marlborough Sunds

The Marlborough Sounds

about the Marlborough Sounds:

In the Marlborough Sounds, there are three sounds the main sounds is Queen Charlotte Sound, Kenepuru  Sound, and Pelorus Sound. the Tory channel is a major arm of the Queen Charlotte Sound and the passage the inter-island ferry uses.   on the kenepuru sound is a place called the portage . the term portage refers to the carrying of a boat over land. this may have been an area where canoes were carried from Kenepuru Sound to Queen Charlotte.

There are many islands in the Sounds. Many are named after the people who discovered them. D'Urvill Island is named after a French explorer. some of the islands are very important for protecting native species. Maud Island is an example of this, being home to Kakapo , Takahe, and required to land on the Island.

The Marlborough Sounds are popular for sailing, as the waters are usually calm.  but the cook strait, however, is infamous for its strong currents and rough waters, especially when the wind is going south of the north
